The New Word Order

The internet has opened up so many opportunities for those of us who are interested in broadcast media. This is a broad field and it is easy to get lost in the mix of activities. Are you in it for the business benefits or does your program serve another purpose?

It is important as broadcasters that we ask ourselves these questions before getting lost in translation. When people tune-in to your broadcast is your message clear? Meaning is your message random or targeted to a specific group? Are you trying to appeal to an audience for the purpose of entertainment, education, or a mix of the two? Or is this just a hobby and you're not sure which direction you are headed? Understanding your business model or mode of existence in broadcast media can help you navigate some of the hurdles like viewers/listenership. Specifically what is interesting about your broadcast and where do you find the interested people to watch/listen. What is your expectation or goals as far as viewers/listeners are concerned? If successful how do you plan on leveraging this success for future success?

In a free market economy, one of the objectives of businesses is to make a profit by providing a product or service to meet the demands of their customers/consumers. If there is no demand then your objective is to generate demand by appealing to customers/consumers in the hopes that they will change their behavior to desire your product or service. The latter of the two is a very difficult process.

The above holds true for profit and non-profit organizations. Non-profit organizations must also appeal to customers/consumers.

One of the hardest tasks in any industry is educating the customer/consumer. Getting this group to value the importance of your product/service and then deciding to support through purchase/donation is even more challenging when your product or service is undefined or new to the marketplace.

I would like to engage many of you on the topic of defining a marketplace for our brand of business meaning Radio/Video Stations & Shows. Where are we going with these endeavors? I have engaged many of you in disucussions and there are some really brilliant ideas floating about. It is time to start putting plan to paper and tracking the success of these endeavors.

I think this is a fantastic forum to get the show on the road.

There is so much potential these days for a free thinker to be well on his way to an infinity circling pattern without proper grounding. Excellent post Budda! It is easy to get caught up in the "fun" aspect and end up in a position of "this is serious now". It is so important to set goals, visions, and action plans into place.
