Joanna Ballard's Bio

Joanna Ballard’s blend of original stories, poetry, folk tales and fairy tales from around the world along with her unique performance delights both young and old. Ms. Ballard engages the audience in dialog and often gets them to participate with her in the art of storytelling.

Joanna is a Northwest Louisiana native and current member of the Trapped Truth Society, the Shreveport Writers’ Registry, the Red River Storytellers, the Northwest Louisiana Art Gallery, and founding member of the West Edge Artists Co-op. Ms. Ballard began her storytelling and writing career before she could even read or write by creating her own songs and stories. She was first published at the age of 16 and has been widely published and won numerous contests. Joanna earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in English with a Theater Minor from Southern Arkansas University in Magnolia AR in 1986. Her lifelong love of words and stories carries over in her enthusiastic storytelling adding flair and flavor to her shows.

Joanna Ballard also shares her stories in other formats as an artist intertwining her love for words and color digitally in her own self styled “poetic art”. This art has grown out of her talent and enjoyment in sharing her stories thru web design and photography. Artist Statement

Words and their origins, textures, sounds, and symbols have always fascinated me. I was making up songs and stories, even before I could read and write, as well as questioning where words came from and why and how people, places, and things got their names. I have always been fascinated by color, especially the vibrant colors around me in Northwest Louisiana. Until the internet came along, I was never satisfied with what came out of my hands onto the page with drawing and traditional art the “stories” never came out quite right.
The internet combined with my photography has given me free range with blending my words with sight and sound (spoken word and music) in an exciting way to share my visual ‘stories”. I had never considered taking them away from the web and blending them for display till a few years ago. I am constantly exploring and experimenting. I often combine different photos taken with different cameras and at times add my poetry to the mix in an attempt to get my visual “stories” just right. There is no telling where my imagination and creativity will take me and my visual “stories”!

As far as oral storytelling goes, people and their stories have always intrigued me. I agree with Mark Twain who said "There was never yet an uninteresting life. Such a thing is an impossibility. Inside of the dullest exterior there is a drama, a comedy and a tragedy." I love listening and learning from others of life and in particular their own stories which often find their way dressed up and rearranged in my oral storytelling art.

Words, sounds and color, to me, are exciting mysterious and challenging in any medium! I enjoy exploring and sharing my “stories” in many avenues to a wide and varied audience.

The Lost One (Poem)

Surprise, I can't sleep again, more than one young person of late has told me. "I'm lost." Sooooooooo thus this is born ....

Enjoy!?

The Lost One

You catch him

in the

corner of

your eye.

Bald,

pierced,

tattooed.

Apparently

juiced,

high,

or

a nut,

with a

screw

loose.

Someone

else's

problem.

A lost

one.

You don't

dare

care.

My Dream Eye (Poem)

I couldn't sleep last night soooooooooooooo I wrote *shrug*

Enjoy!?

My Dream Eye

is out of focus.

When I

try

to

adjust,

blurs,

whirs,

nonsensical

kaleidoscopic

bursts.

History is Made (Poem)

Maybe it is just my cynical idealism, ... maybe it is folks the world over pining hopes on one human being with all the frailties and glory being human entails, ... maybe just maybe it is all the stories I am entrusted with the unsung heroes and heroines, that NEVER make the news, that have fallen in wide cracks of our justice and medical systems, ... maybe it is the reality of the good ole boys network, wars, poverty, injustice, ... maybe the stories I know and can do nothing but weep over .Continue

Do You (Poem)

Do You

Know

the need

to make

music

that

swims

in

colors?

Can You

grasp

the yearning

to build

words

that

dance

in

pictures?

Can you

realize

the compulsion

to share

my visions

in ways

the soul

can

taste,

sensualize,

know?

Do you?
