Tamara Lockett is a 2007 graduate of Tulsa Community College. She obtained her associates degree in Liberal Arts. Ms. Lockett plans to pursue her degree in Interior Design at Oklahoma State University. On her own since the age of fourteen and a mother of three by the age of twenty it’s given her the drive and determination to succeed in life. A high school dropout she decided pregnant with her second child to go back to school. Now at the age of 34 and a mother of five her life journey took off in the right direction started her with education.
Ms. Lockett had the opportunity to attend Tulsa Job Corps where she obtained her GED along with her Certified Nurse Aid certificate. While attending Tulsa Job Corp she had also achieved the Outstanding Student Award. She worked as a Certified Nurse Aid for 10 years, with the passion to love people she started working with children. She received her Child Development Associate degree from Tulsa Technology School in 2000. Her education had no boundaries as she received her Instructor License of Cosmetology in 2001. She operated a home-based daycare and Salon. Ms. Lockett decided to name her businesses “Beauty Comes Naturally” and “Beautiful Children Nurtured” because it had captured the initials of her three sons: Boyea, Cedrick, and NayVonte’. Her sons also took an interest in Gospel Rap, BCN with Guardian Angels under the direction of Ms. Lockett as the lyrical writer.
Furthering her education she attended Dudley’s Cosmetology University of North Carolina. The founder and president of 3D Confidence, a self-esteem program for youth has given Ms. Lockett the motivation to educate the young by creating and facilitate programs based on special events that allow the youth to gain opportunities in social and business settings.
3D Confidence was developed two years ago and was inspired by using the technique of modeling to motivate the youth in the community. This pilot program has been successful in creating events which builds a platform through fashion shows.
Her goal is to provide 3D Confidence the means to deal with the internal and eternal issues, allowing them to redirect and channel its effect so that it becomes a positive force in their life. 3D Confidence expands the use of creativity, expression, and growth through the performing arts of modeling. The program allows youth the ability to showcase their talents on stage, which includes: public speaking, modeling, dance, and interpretation. Our goal is to implement educational, social, business etiquette and diversity communication programs in the near future.
She has partnered with various community entities, including Tulsa Job Corps, The Barber Cutt-Off, Tulsa Community College-NAACP youth council, Tulsa Community College Day of Vision, KIPP foundation, Alzheimer’s Associations, Sober Day Benefit, Strut Benefit, Ovarian Cancer Benefit, Bluestar Moms, The Chloe House, Greater Grace Church (college preparation), The International Black Film Festival of Nashville, Rip Da Runway in Hollywood, California and B.E.T. 106 & Park Wild Out Wednesday. She was also honored with Contribution to Service Learning & Outreach Award by Tulsa Community College.
Ms. Lockett an aspiring screenwriter is at the prime of her life. She’s embarking into the film industry, speaking on a panel at the International Black Film Festival on “creating story lines for Film and Television. She also directed a workshop for self-esteem, imaging, and business etiquette for the young people.
She has learned that life teaches you something, even when you don’t want to learn. One day Ms. Lockett read a billboard that caught her eye and it surprisingly said, “If you have love and conviction, you don’t need laws to be controlled.” With a huge smile on her face, she gracefully says that she has faith in her program just because she believes our youth of today will benefit from this program.
