I don't want to be your Hip-Hop laureate-
Just a Poet
I wanted to be a poet, before just being a damn poet became lame... (You know)
Before Spoken word gained its fame.
I know Hip-hop is from Poetry's genetic strain-
they share the same DNA -but
Do Not Attempt -to blur the lines between
Hip-hop and Poetry...
Poetry is Hip-hop's older more mature sister...
You know the one that everybody wants to do...
but they can't -
And when they try and fail-
They lie and say,"Yea, I did poetry"
Now
Hip-hop is showing all the signs of being as fly as her big sister
But-if you ask me-(and you didn't)
She can't seem to make up her mind
She doesn't know
Where she wants to go
What she wants to do
Who she wants to be
They even say that Hip-hop has become a lifestyle
Throwing her weight around, telling kids what to do, what to say, what to wear, what's cool
and how they should care...Shyt
But Poetry is LIFE!
She gives Life!
In her womb she has carried slave songs...
the rhythm of African, Asian and Native American drums...untamed tongues...las sangre de mi Tierra!
She gave birth to the Songs of Solomon, Shakespeare's sonnets and The Psalms...
Whether she's happy, sad, bewildered or mad-
If she's feeling sexy, abused, used or just plain had...She is divinity...She is Poetry!
And the media is calling Hip-Hop a culture?
(Ha! Can you believe that shyt?)
More like vulture-
hovering over poetry's wasteland...
getting full on half truths and self-righteous; self-entitlement....scratching and scrounging...
hustling up what similarities she can...
Please! Don't get me wrong.
Like I said before-
Hip-Hop is as fly as HELL!
I remember the first time I met her...
I was in love with her rhythm and her rhyme's
I hung on every word she said...
That shyt musta went to her head!
She started hanging out with R&B and lately...
she's even been seen with Country!
Now me (being from Texas) I don't have a problem with that...but...
Does that seem like Hip-Hop to you?
Like I said earlier...maybe she's forgotten where she came from...and now she'll do anything to sell.
Trying her Damnedest to go gold or better yet (and most recently) Platinum!!!!
Bling! Bling!
That's why I will always love poetry in all her many shapes and forms.
The older she gets the more she grows...
She is ever changing-
And I believe it's her ability to constantly evolve that makes her worth loving.
And yet- as she changes...
She is always the same, no matter who she's been married to-
She never changed her name ( maybe hyphenated)
She remains absorbent, freely giving-growth and open exchange
Never forgetting who she is and always proud to
say her name...POETRY!
And even though Hip-Hop is trying to stake her claim...Poetry will always be...
The dialogue of the people, by the people and for the people...
Come on say her name with me...
POETRY!
